ATTN Students: Dale Guldan Memorial Scholarship Available

DALE GULDAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A co-worker at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel described Dale Guldan this way–“At its core, journalism is based on storytelling, and in that trade, Dale Guldan was a master craftsman.” Guldan was a staff photographer at the Milwaukee Journal and later, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel since 1977, and died at age 51.

Dale Guldan was a gifted photographer, creating images that informed, inspired and entertained. The camera was his means of expression, his medium for conveying the stories he saw and the passion he felt. His work was honored with countless awards, including winning the Wisconsin News Photographer of the Year title four years in a row.

He was compassionate, participating in medical and relief missions around the world. He had a quick wit and was a sly practical joker. And at the heart of it all was his love and devotion to his wife and two children.

Dale’s contributions to the photojournalism community continue through The Dale Guldan Memorial Scholarship. This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in a Wisconsin college or university and is studying photography. The purpose of this scholarship is to reward students who are dedicated to the art of photography and/or photojournalism.

Applicant requirements

  1. Student must be a Wisconsin resident, or be attending a college or university in Wisconsin in an undergraduate or graduate program.
  2. Student must be pursuing a career in photography or photojournalism-related field.

Application Procedure

  1. Complete the application. Deadline is May 25, 2007.
  2. Write a 500-word statement describing your aspirations regarding photography, your reasons for choosing this field, and any future plans that may include studying or practicing photography.
  3. Submit a portfolio of 6-10 images. Picture stories are encouraged, and will count as one entry in the portfolio. Stories are limited to 10 photographs. Total number of images in the portfolio may not exceed 20. Quality is more important than quantity, so edit your work carefully. This is not strictly a portfolio contest. Portfolios will be evaluated on technical ability, style and ability to make connections with your subject.

Student POY: Thank You

WNPA Members,

After accepting my student POY award this past weekend, I just wanted to say thank you. True, I am picking-up and moving to Wisconsin, but I also feel as though I am being ushered-in and welcomed. I am incredibly excited to have the opportunity to work alongside you all in the future. You will be the ones who continue to inspire me as I begin my career.

It was a pleasure meeting many of you in Milwaukee.

My warmest regards,
–Michael P. King

Convention Food Guide and POY advice from NP

As the WNPA POY contest looms on the horizon I thought it was only appropriate to chime in with some tips and tricks for first-timers on how to keep your sanity during and after the judging.

I know how it is, the photo, or even worse, the story that you had attached all of your hopes for recognition to gets the heave-ho from the judges. Instead of immediately expressing your disgust in the direct and less than dignified form of a moan, groan or expletive, remember that judging is a highly subjective process.

Just because someone stomps on your “baby” it doesn’t mean that they hold any contempt of feel any disrespect for you or your work in general. If you’re mad about the results, take it out on the 2007 POY contest… you have 9 months left to make your winning images.

With that said, I do understand that after judging has ended many photographers will have cause to celebrate or drown their sorrows… please do so responsibly. Besides, if you overdo it, you are going to miss out on some of the fantastic door prizes. Mr. Powers has secured a wide variety of great prizes and arriving late for the morning or afternoon sessions will result in missing your chance at some great gear.

Since everyone is going to have to fill their stomach with some sort of sustenance during the convention, I have also compiled the following list of restaurant type places that I enjoy eating at when in the downtown Milwaukee area:

The King and I (Thai cuisine *vegetarian options)
830 Old World 3rd St
http://www.kingandirestaurant.com/

Buck Bradley’s (great burgers, sandwiches, fish fry)
1019 Old World 3rd St
http://www.buckbradleys.com/

The Historic Turner Restaurant (American and German cuisine)
1034 N 4th St
http://www.historicturner.com/

Alterra at The Lake (great coffee, tea, quick breakfast or lunch *vegetarian options)
1701 N Lincoln Memorial Dr

The Old German Beer Hall (Brats, Fish fry)

CONVENTION UPDATE: Brenda Kenneally can’t make it, Mimi Chakarova can.

Saturday, March 24, 2007 — Convention speaker Brenda Kenneally is not able to make it to this year’s convention as she previously thought due to a major development in a documentary she has been working on over the past three years.

The WNPA would like to welcome Mimi Chakarova as a most recent addition to this year’s continually impressive speaker lineup. Chakarova has had numerous solo exhibitions of her documentary projects on South Africa, Jamaica and Cuba, as well as documentary work on sex trafficking in Eastern Europe.
