WPOY Contest rules addition

One small addition to the WPOY contest rules. The general news category is also the correct category for documentary work. The category should read “General News/Documentary.” The News Picture Story category should also read “News Picture Story/Documentary.”

Hope this helps clarify where to put your entry. Best of luck to everyone!

WIAA orders two Wisconsin newspapers to stop selling tournament video coverage

By Mark Hertzberg, Racine Journal Times Director of Photography

WNPA members are joining several state and national organizations in opposition to credentialing regulations of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA). We have become aware that WIAA has contracted with two independent photography business, one still and one video, to cover tournaments, including regional sectional rounds.

WIAA’s contracts with these businesses prohibits newspapers from selling still or video reprints of their tournament coverage. The restriction is one of the conditions of being credentialed to cover the tournaments. Both the Appleton Post-Crescent and Racine Journal Times were ordered to stop selling video reprints of tournament football games. WIAA said that the restriction at the lower tournament level could be waived upon payment of a $100 licensing fee, which the newspapers have said they will not pay.

It is hoped that an agreement can be worked out before the start of winter tournament play.

Jonathan Utz of the State Journal has been our contact with WIAA. He is working with Dwight Nale (Appleton), Bill Olmsted (Janesville), Sherman Williams (Milwaukee), and me.

Mark Hertzberg WNPA Member Pic

Racine Journal Times Photo Director Mark Hertzberg, right, converses with defense attorney Robert D’Arruda prior to a sentencing hearing for his client, Adrial White, who was accused of murdering one man and attempting to murder a second man. White was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Hertzberg covered the weeklong-plus trial in early January, offering several photo updates from the courtroom during the trial for publication on JournalTimes.com in addition to images in the newspaper’s print edition. Change coming in Eau Claire

An announcement was made here in Eau Claire today that after many years of being a weekday “evening” newspaper the Leader-Telegram will be switching to 7-day-a-week a.m. publication.

With this change taking place sometime in June some adjustment will need to be made to our photo staff’s daily schedules. I’m hoping some of you folks in places like Appleton, Green Bay, Madison, Racine, Sheboygan (and anywhere else)would share information on how you are scheduled in a “normal” week. What times are the standard shifts at your paper? Do you rotate day/night shifts? How is Saturday/Sunday work handled?

I’ll keep an eye on the weblog or I’d love to get an email from you at steve.kinderman@ecpc.com

This conversion will be a far bigger shock for our reporters and copy desk than it will be for us in the Photo and Sports Depts. Personally I’m looking forward to the change. I can’t say I’ll really miss the 5 a.m. alarm clock to make the 6:30 a.m. news budget meeting!

Thanks for any insights you can provide,

Steve Kinderman
