Hey guys…
So, now that we know who our speakers are, it’s time for my annual fundraising (door prizes!) for the convention. I will talk to my usual folks who have been VERY generous, but I’m wondering if there is anything out there that you think would be cool to win. And no…Porsche is not an option. I would say that our donated items have ranged in price from $10 to $350 depending on the item. I am also wondering if you guys might consider talking to your editors regarding a donation/door prize from you newspaper. As an example, The Post-Crescent is going to donate another camera this year…I know that Rick Wood is enjoying his Leica digital point and shoot from last year! No donation/door prize is too small and we had a lot of fun giving things away to those who attended last year’s convention. So…fire away and let me know what you think…either post an idea or email me at dpowers@postcrescent.com, and the sooner the better! Thanks…Dan.

Hey all…
As you may know, we finally hired a photographer to fill the shoes of Kristyna Wentz-Graff who moved on to The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Well, after about five months the person we hired decided to leave us and photojournalism entirely. That being said, I’m happy to say we have hired our most recent intern Michael P. King. He starts in late June or early July, after he graduates from college. He might attend the WNPA convention, so please welcome him to Wisconsin! Thanks…Dan.

Famed National Geographic photographer Jim Brandenburg will be speaking at the 2007 convention on Saturday, March 31 at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Dear WNPA members,
Please accept my belated thanks in honoring the memory of my husband, Dale through your generous gift of co- sponsoring the photo exhibit of the Dale Guldan Collection at V.P. gallery of Fine Photography, in Milwaukee .
Your sponsorship provided for a generous contribution which was put to good use in
providing for my children’s college education.
My son, Sam, is preparing to graduate this summer from UWM with a B.S. degree in Organizational Administration, and is also completing his Associate Degree from Gateway Technical College in Aeronautical Sciences. Sam’s goal is to become a commercial Pilot.
My daughter, Sarah, is planning to apply to the School of Business at UW- Madison in her junior year. These are exciting times in both of their lives.
I want to thank all of you once again for all of your support in what has been a very
trying time for our family. You are very special to my family and me.
Sincerely,
Joyce Guldan

Dallas Morning News photojournalist David Leeson is the first confirmed speaker for the 2007 WNPA convention Friday-Saturday March 30-31 in Milwaukee.
He recently wrote a thought-provoking essay on Sportsshooter.com on the the future of photojournalism. Here is the link:
Leeson - The Future of Photojournalism
We have not decided on a location yet, pending the announcement of our Canon Explorer of Light speaker. The Milwaukee Art Museum has some advantages and disadvantages and we’ll need to balance those issues.
This year’s contest will be run by Nathan Pier.
It’s never to early to start editing your entries.
Instructions & rules are expected to be the same as they have in past years. Look for a mailing in the next couple of weeks. They will also be posted on the website.
We have a room block at the Hotel Metro. If you’re interested in a room there, please contact me at mhoffman@journalsentinel.com.
We’re hoping to announce our other speakers in the next couple of weeks. If you have suggestions please drop me a line.
I hope to see you there,
Mark Hoffman

This is the official discussion thread for talking about whether or not this year’s Wisconsin News Photographer Association’s Photographer of the Year competition should consider adding a multimedia category.
Here are some arguments and counterarguments to get us going:
Why we should add a multimedia category:
Photojournalists across the state and across the country are devoting more and more time to videography, sound recording and multimedia production. There should be a reliable way to award merit for their work and innovations in the same way we already recognize the time-honored traditions that are in place.
Why we need to avoid adding a multimedia category:
Not all projects are the same, it would be like judging apples versus oranges. A project made on soundslides should not be compared with an elaborate Flash presentation that the photojournalist contributed to, but did not produce. Also, the judging process could be problematic, and ultimately time-consuming.
Discuss …
