August 29, 2006 - According to a report published on Businesswire.com Tuesday, Community Newspapers, Inc., a Milwaukee-area based suburban weekly newspaper group, is expected to cut approximately 15 positions from its newsroom print staff within the next several weeks as the company shifts its focus toward increasing its online news presence.
Journal Interactive is expected to add about 10 new jobs devoted to writing and developing the CNI web sites, among other projects, the report said.
There is no word on the nature and/or extent of the staff cuts at the time of the report.

August 25, 2006 - The spam filter regularly used to block spam comments on the WNPA weblog went nuts. It not only blocked unwanted comments, it also blocked everyone else wishing to add to our online discussions. Sorry. It has been removed from the site until a suitable replacement can be found.

August 24, 2006 - Rick Wood of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently received a call from Bill Appleby of VP Gallery who organized a photo show of the work of Dale Guldan, a staff photographer at the Milwaukee Journal and WNPA member who died unexpectedly last year.
WNPA helped co-sponser a photo exhibit of his work that was shown at the gallery with the proceeds from the prints sales to benefit the children of Joyce Guldan, his wife, who lives in Brookfield, Wisconsin…Wood is happy to report that VP sold 39 prints from the show which generated a $2,000 gift to Joyce (she picked up the check this week in Milwaukee).
It was wildly successful and showed many persons living the power of Dale’s pictures.
Joyce indicated the funds will come in handy as college tuition payments for her children become due soon…..Thanks to Bill Appleby of VP for doing all the legwork to make this show such a success in Dale’s memory.

From Roger Turner, retired Wisconsin State Journal Photographer
Cliff (and June) Harmon of The Harmon Studio in Algoma, WI were good friends
of WNPA. Used to provide hospitality rooms at WNPA functions and worked
with members to give ‘em good service and preferential treatment on
equipment purchases.
Quite by accident I crossed paths with him two weeks ago in a nursing home
in Algoma while I was there with another friend of ours. Cliff has
Parkinson’s disease and, though I didn’t think he was even aware of my
speaking with him, he did react. I thought he was having a really bad
reaction to my visit and got a nurse who said he was trying to communicate.
His daughter is the head of the nursing staff and she was thrilled when she
heard I’d visited him. Thought it would be wonderful if others who knew
him might stop by or send a note. (Who knows when any of us might be in
similar straits and a little bit of attention might bring a lot of joy to
Cliff and his family.) To that end I’m wondering if the WNPA website or any
mailing in the very near future might pass along this call.
He’s at: Algoma Long Term Care Unit
1510 Fremont St
Algoma, WI 54201

August 18, 2006 - Are you creating video for your paper’s website? Feeling lonely and outcast? Join the NewspaperVideo email list for fellow photographers who have discovered the joys of dropouts, codecs, nle’s, and bitrates!
Newspaper video journalists are a rare but rapidly-expanding breed. I’m Chuck Fadely, a veteran still shooter at the Miami Herald. I’ve switched to shooting video full time and I’m starting this email list to let us link up and share experiences. While publishers seem to be gung-ho on video, newsrooms often don’t seem to know what to do with it. Maybe this’ll help figure it out.
The membership is vetted and is intended for newspaper staffers; it should be low traffic. Some of the topics I’d like to talk about:
story telling
newsroom structure and politics
workflow
workload
assignment vs. authorship
web players
traffic measurement
ad placement
codecs, bitrates, compression
gear
audio
video vs. SoundSlides vs. Flash packages
etc
Send an email to NewspaperVideo-subscribe@yahoogroups.com mailto:NewspaperVideo-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or go to the NewspaperVideo site at http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/NewspaperVideo and sign up. Please tell me who you are, and real names….
If you can’t or don’t want to sign up for Yahoo Groups!, send an email mailto:cfadely@miamiherald.com with your name and email and I’ll add you to the mail list manually.
Please forward this to any other shooters you know who might be interested.
Thanks,
Chuck Fadely
