Clarence Voigt usually doesn’t go far without his good buddy John. Together they trim hedges, check the mailbox, and go to the local diner to get a bite to eat.
All that John asks in return is for some gas and little light maintenance. Voigt’s John Deere LT155 lawn tractor has returned some of his lost independence. He suffers from Parkinson’s disease, and a World War II injury forces him to use a walker.
Voigt can’t drive anymore, but instead of feeling sorry for himself, the town of Menasha resident uses the tools around him to care for his home and yard.
“It’s hard to see somebody else do your work for you,” explains Voigt while mounted on his rider mower.
He has crafted a wooden frame to secure his walker to the side of the tractor while he’s driving it. He uses a makeshift extension pole to trim the hedges while seated in his John Deere. The contraption includes a household light switch to power the tool.
It’s all evidence of Voigt’s crafty way of living life by his own terms.
The day will come when Voigt will need more assistance from family and friends. But in the meantime his buddy John is working just fine. “The tractor is working just swell for me. Good ole’ John.”
